Dear John, In 2022, A4TE conducted the U.S. Transgender Survey (USTS), the largest survey of trans people in the United States, in partnership with the National Black Trans Advocacy Coalition, TransLatin@ Coalition, and National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance.
Over 92,000 binary and nonbinary trans people took the survey! In the years since, I and other brilliant staff members have been closely analyzing this data, and last week, we were pleased to release our latest report, Health and Wellbeing: Findings from the 2022 U.S. Trans Survey. |
Here are 3 key takeaways for you: |
-
Social and/or medical transition leads to happier, healthier trans people. 94% of our respondents said they were more satisfied with life after they started living as their true selves.
-
Supportive families save lives. Respondents with supportive families reported not just significantly better health outcomes, but also being less likely to be driven towards suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
-
Access to general medical care is increasing, as is access to transition-related care, but significant gaps remain. Compared to the 2015 USTS, a greater number of respondents reported being able to access routine medical, mental, and transition-related care. However, when compared to the broader population, respondents report worse health and lower rates of insurance, signaling unique health-related issues for our community.
|
We've put these reports in the hands of senators in Washington to give them a clear picture of our community and our healthcare needs. Since our opponents are threatening to strip access to Medicaid away from trans Americans based on outright lies, this knowledge is power.
Our work with the 2022 USTS survey provides deep insights about trans people for decision makers across the country. We’ll keep diving into the data so we can verify what we already know to be true: it is lifesaving for trans people to live their lives out authentically.
This work is only possible because of supporters like you. As this White House continues its efforts to defund and discredit research about trans lives, your support ensures that critical data about our community doesn’t disappear. A monthly gift sustains the research, advocacy, and visibility our community needs to thrive. |
Sincerely, Ankit Rastogi, PhD (they/them) A4TE Director of Research |
