In a major victory for public health — led by APHA — a federal judge ruled on Monday that some of the NIH grant terminations by the Trump administration are "void and illegal."
Dr. Georges Benjamin, APHA's executive director, spoke with STAT [ [link removed] ] , The Hill [ [link removed] ] and others about this ruling.
STAT
“As an African American male who’s practiced clinical medicine, who’s been in a hospital emergency department, I know what happens to populations that have been neglected,” said Georges Benjamin, the executive director of the APHA, after the decision. “This is rewarding, and it’s an acknowledgment by the courts that health equity research, health disparities research, diversity, equity and inclusion research, whatever term you want to use, is valid, and that it’s not discriminatory.”
The Hill
“We’re certainly very pleased with the judge’s decision, and actually the way he portrayed it as, you know, discrimination. I think that’s pure and simple, that the administration was trying to undermine the health and well-being of these populations,” Georges Benjamin, executive director of the APHA.
Resources
We wanted to share a new resource that just launched today.
The CDC Data Project [ [link removed] ] was developed by Fired But Fighting, a network of former CDC employees, to summarize publicly available federal agency and budget data to show the impact of the proposed FY26 budget on efforts to help Americans live safer, healthier and longer lives.
Take a moment to review the site, educate yourself on the budget cuts proposed to public health and share this with your contacts.
This is a great resource for advocacy to support public health.
Speak for Health
Public health is under threat from program cuts, misinformation and attacks on science — putting decades of progress at risk.
At APHA, we’re speaking out, filing lawsuits and taking action to defend evidence-based policies and protect the systems that keep people healthy. But we can’t do it alone.
