Do you ever see headlines like these and wonder, “how did our politics get so broken?”
It’s like Robin Hood, but in reverse. They’re stealing from the poor to hand permanent tax cuts to mega-millionaires.
I’ll tell you something I learned about MAGA Republicans who are calling the shots in D.C.:
Most of them can’t begin to relate to the lives of working New Mexicans.
Most of them haven’t ever had to do mental math in line at the grocery store, frantically calculating whether your SNAP benefits will stretch far enough.
Most of them don’t know how it feels to watch overdraft fees pile up while praying that your paycheck will hit in time to pay rent.
Most will never understand how expensive it is to be poor.
My path to public service has been anything but conventional. When I was a single mom just trying to make ends meet for Somáh and me, I probably would’ve laughed if you told me I’d be running for governor of New Mexico one day.
But these are the life experiences and struggles that made me fierce. And they’re why I’m so determined to deliver bold solutions that alleviate the poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity weighing heavy on our state. Winning this race won’t be easy, but I’m hopeful that, by working together, we can enact smart, compassionate policies that make life a little easier for hardworking families.
When I say I want to change the game for New Mexico, here’s what I mean:
It’s clear to everyone but the billionaires that our current system isn’t working. So it’s time to choose a new path, where working people’s voices aren’t drowned out by corporate lobbyists and greedy special interests.
That’s why I’m relying on generous contributions from you and this grassroots team.
Be fierce,
Deb
