The only federal agency in charge of enforcing our nation’s gun laws is now being run by gun industry loyalists, wreaking havoc on decades of Brady’s efforts and putting countless lives at risk.

New leadership at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has abandoned the protocols that keep us safe and hold the gun industry accountable, entering a “New Era of Reform” under the Trump administration that represents the greatest reversal of policy our movement has ever witnessed.

Brady worked with the Biden Administration to improve and enhance ATF policies. With ATF on the side of public safety, dealers were held to the standards of the ‘Zero Tolerance Policy,’ hundreds of Federal Firearms Licences (FFLs) were revoked from lawbreaking gun stores, and law enforcement was able to remove significantly more crime guns from our communities.

Now, ATF is granting licenses to negligent dealers and encouraging those whose licenses were revoked to reapply. This new era knows no limit on who should receive licenses to deal guns, making one thing clear: The gun lobby is not only interested in everyone having a gun, but also in allowing anyone to sell guns. The gun industry only cares about moving its product and making a profit, with no regard for the human toll.

John, I need you to understand: Gun crime will skyrocket. We’ve seen this happen before– homicide rates rose nationally during the first Trump administration, and this time around, they’re working overtime to undo our progress. The ATF wants us to believe that this chapter is marked by “transparency” and “accountability,” but their actions say otherwise— Public records of negligent gun dealers have been removed from the ATF’s website, putting a barrier between the public and the information that keeps their communities safe. The agency dedicated to protecting the American people is instead protecting the identity of some of the gun industry's most dangerous actors.

As an even bigger gift to the gun lobby, the ATF has created a new position specifically designed to work as a liaison to the gun industry. Not only are they rolling back protections, they’re adding manpower to ensure that gun lobby interests are fulfilled rather than the interests of the American people.

We cannot stay quiet while our government trades favors to the gun lobby for our lives, John. Without the ATF carefully overseeing gun laws, it is impossible to stop guns from getting into the wrong hands. Lives are at stake and we must take action. >>
