John–
Right now, communities across the country are experiencing immense heartbreak, fear, and confusion with the recent surge of ICE raids. Let me say this up front: immigrants make our communities stronger, and I am standard firmly against these attacks on our neighbors.
Donald Trump campaigned on detaining and deporting “dangerous criminals” – but that’s not what’s happening. What I saw at the Northwest Detention Center recently, and what we’re seeing in Los Angeles and Eastern Washington and all across the country, is the administration targeting our neighbors, coworkers, parents, and siblings with no regard for due process.
So, how do these raids make us safer? They don’t. It’s yet another lie from the Trump Administration designed to sow division and hate.
Those who decide to immigrate to America do so in pursuit of opportunity and a better future for their kids. That drive to succeed and provide for family is something that we can all relate to – it’s the promise of the American Dream.
My own Chicano grandparents moved from Utah to Washington in the 1960s to escape racism and find a more welcoming community, and they were able to build a strong future for themselves and their children through union work. While our family didn’t immigrate (the border crossed us), their lifelong commitment to doing good for the world around them is at the root of my public service today – especially in working in solidarity alongside immigrant neighbors and organizers in our community.
Right now, the Trump Administration is amplifying anti-immigrant rhetoric and manufacturing a crisis, deploying members of our military to quell protests in what is a transparently authoritarian power grab.
This is not normal, and we should all be alarmed. This moment demands action – I hope you’ll join me.
