Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill


Today marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. On June 17, 1775, American patriots clashed with British forces on Breed’s Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts

Squaring off against approximately 2,500 British troops, the American force of about 1,500 faced a daunting challenge.
Historian George Bancroft captured<[link removed]> the tension:

Prescott [Colonel William Prescott] waited till the enemy had approached within eight rods [132 feet]...when he gave the word "Fire!" At once from the redoubt and breastwork, every gun was discharged.


Initially surprised by the fierce resistance, the British retreated. Yet, they regrouped and returned.
Since they outnumbered the Americans, who struggled with dwindling ammunition, the British secured<[link removed]> a tactical victory that day. Nevertheless, their heavy losses—over 1,000 casualties—proved the colonists’ resolve.


Amid this fierce stand, black patriots like Salem Poor<[link removed]> and Peter Salem exemplified courage. Salem Poor earned praise for his bravery, while Peter Salem<[link removed]> is credited with killing British officer John Pitcairn.

The battle even touched a young John Quincy Adams, who witnessed<[link removed]> the conflict’s smoke and chaos as a young boy. This moment shaped his view of the American cause for liberty.
