Leadership

Greetings, readers!

Before we get into this week’s newsletter, it’s worth calling attention to some happenings within our sector. Last week, the chairs of the US House Committee on Homeland Security and Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations and Accountability announced a joint “probe” into some 200 nonprofit organizations “involved in providing services or support to inadmissible aliens during the Biden-Harris administration’s historic border crisis.” The subtext was evident at a recent House subcommittee hearing on nonprofits, during which guests from right-wing think tanks painted nonprofits assisting migrants as a clandestine cabal bent on thwarting US immigration law. We will be following developments.

Now, let’s move into some more inspiring reads. First, Jan Masaoka continues her series on nonprofits and volunteerism with a look at all-volunteer organizations. Next, in a new NPQ column, Venu Gupta dives into the role of friendship in maintaining democratic structures. Then, staff writer Rebekah Barber goes over the latest State of Nonprofits report from the Center for Effective Philanthropy.

Finally, we invite you to register for our upcoming Premium webinar, “From Performance Management to Mutual Commitment: Fostering a Culture of Joyful Accountability.” Join us on Thursday, June 26, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm ET, and take advantage of early bird registration until June 20.

We love hearing from you. Email Leadership Editor Isaiah Thompson at [email protected].

Premium Webinar: “From Performance Management to Mutual Commitment: Fostering a Culture of Joyful Accountability”

As equity-centered nonprofits, performance management approaches rooted in punishment are contrary to our values. At the same time, we need to foster a culture of accountability. How can we create practices rooted in joy, shared purpose, care, and growth—rather than control, power, and fear—while also advancing team accountability? You don’t want to miss this webinar featuring Jovida Ross and Weyam Ghadbian, coauthors of Turning Towards Each Other: A Conflict Workbook. Thursday, June 26, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm ET. Early bird registration ends on June 20! Register today...
