Write Field saw its 14th class of young men graduate last Friday. We celebrated the growth of 30 students, many from low-income families, in this special writing program. Joining them was the first class of 20 young women in this program, where 10 writing workshops each year offer a chance to meet role models, gain mentors and imagine new possibilities.
Matthew was one of seven graduating seniors who read essays in front of 125 dinner guests that night at Poynter. He’s going to UNC Charlotte in the fall.
Another student, Lilliana Ward, wrote about how a Write Field speaker inspired her, showcasing what success can look like for a Black woman and reminding her to be proud — of the color of her skin, her vocabulary, her top grades in advanced classes — even if she is often the only Black person in the room at school. She’ll be a junior in high school in the fall.
You can empower students like Matthew and Lilliana. When you support this free program for students of color, you help them learn confidence, public speaking, and the power of finding their voice as a writer.
