The Senate GOP is on a collision course with reality — and they are deciding to look the other way.
Another 1.5 million people filed for unemployment benefits for the first time last week, and nearly 30,000 more people have lost their lives since May 15 when Democrats passed the HEROES Act in the House. But Mitch McConnell has refused to allow a Senate vote on the bill which would provide critical aid and other relief to American workers, families, students, schools, and state and local governments.
Without these resources, state and city governments will be forced to layoff millions of additional workers — and public hospitals, fire departments, teachers and vital infrastructure will be placed in jeopardy. It would be gross negligence for Mitch McConnell to adjourn the Senate for the July 4th break without passing key relief.
Add your name to demand that Mitch McConnell allow the Senate to vote on the HEROES act and take action to avoid further economic collapse and hardship.
Make no mistake: despite the election-year fantasies spewed by my GOP colleagues and the Trump White House, our economy is nowhere near recovery. Over 20 million Americans are out of work. The jobless rate in May is still the highest since the Great Depression. And the Federal Reserve expects the unemployment rate to still be above 9% at the end of the year.
Cutting off unemployment support to American workers now is the wrong way to go. And holding states, towns, schools, and so many others hostage in the middle of a global health crisis is grossly irresponsible. It will do immediate and long term damage.
Tell Mitch: American families are not bargaining chips!
The coronavirus pandemic has decimated state budgets across the country. Only the federal government has the power to offset massive deficits caused by falling tax revenue and the unprecedented demand for medical care.
But McConnell, whose state faces one of the worst public pension crises in the country, is willing to adjourn the Senate for the July 4th break before addressing these emergency issues. As the 2017 tax law made clear, that he works for his Wall Street and big corporate donors, not the American people.
We can’t afford to let him get away with it.
Thank you for standing up for what's right,
Chris
