Donald Trump unveiled an updated version of the racist, xenophobic and hateful travel ban from his first administration.
People from 12 countries are now completely banned from entering the United States, and seven more face significant visa restrictions. These countries were picked to specifically target Black and brown people and prevent them from entering the United States.
Many of the people coming to the United States from these countries are fleeing violence and instability. We have a moral duty to welcome them, not turn them away because of Trump’s white supremacist agenda. Make no mistake: this ban puts lives at risk.
This policy will also tear families apart. People with loved ones abroad may not get the chance to see each other again because of this ban. The cruelty from this administration is the point. They are not doing this for safety. Instead, it’s to cause fear and do real damage to our communities.
Trump’s plan has always been clear: divide us based on our religion, race, and nationality. We can’t let him win. We have to come together and fight back by showing our movement for justice is stronger than their hatred.
We defeated a similar travel ban before, and we know we can do it again – but it’s going to take all of us.
