Friends,
By now you have heard about the horrific events from this weekend that took the life of Speaker-Emerita Mellissa Hortman and her husband, and severely injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.
I am sickened by this entire ordeal.
During my three sessions in the Minnesota House, I’ve gotten to know Rep. Hortman and her husband Mark and they were both quality people. I’ve also served with Senator John Hoffman on a conference committee and have enjoyed my time working with him.
These shootings are horrific. Unbelievable. Senseless.
If ever there was a time to tone down the political rhetoric, this is it. The political arena is never a place for violence; it is a place to share ideas and work out your differences.
Constituents from around our district have been reaching out in the past two days with their thoughts and concerns, hoping my family and I were OK. My thanks for that; it does mean a lot to me. But right now, our focus needs to be on helping the families of the Hortmans and the Hoffmans find peace in this time of tragedy. Please join me in praying for them.
My thanks also go out to law enforcement from across the state for their tireless efforts in finding and arresting this madman. Let’s all hope justice is delivered swiftly.
Steve
