FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"REVISED:" Public Comment Period Extended for Revisions to Skagit County Dangerous Dogs Code
A public hearing was held on June 10, 2025, on proposed revisions to Skagit County code relating to dangerous dogs. To provide additional opportunities for public input, the Skagit County Commissioners have extended the public comment period to Friday, June 27th, at 4:30 p.m.
Comments or questions regarding the proposed revisions can be directed via email to the Skagit County Commissioners at
[email protected] or
[email protected] or by mail to 1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. *All comments must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2025, to be considered.*
Skagit County code provisions relating to dangerous and potentially dangerous dogs outline the process for determining whether an animal is potentially dangerous or dangerous, registration requirements for such animals, and the methods to challenge determinations. The Sheriff’s Office proposed revisions to streamline the determination process and improve language to clarify the County’s procedures if someone violates the ordinance, and clarify animal owners’ obligations and rights to challenge a dangerous or potentially dangerous dog determination.
Changes to Skagit County Code Chapter 7.06 include:
* Updating the definition of dangerous dog to include all types of canine animals, including wolves and coyotes.
* Adding new regulations to determine if an owner has at least 15 dogs and one of the dogs is labelled as dangerous or potentially dangerous, then all of the other dogs can also be labelled as dangerous or potentially dangerous.
* Removing the requirement to first appeal a dangerous or potentially dangerous dog designation to the County Sheriff. Owners will be able to appeal a designation directly to Skagit County District Court.
The proposed amendments are scheduled to be considered for adoption during the consent agenda session on July 7th, 2025.
