This weekend, we saw something terrifying—an attack on public servants and their families in Minnesota. Representative Melissa Hortman, a former Speaker of the Minnesota House, and her husband, were killed in their own home. Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot in their home. My heart breaks for their families, their communities, for the people of Minnesota, and for all Americans as we mourn and seek answers.
What happened in Minnesota is part of a deeply troubling pattern we are seeing across the country: political violence fueled by division, anger, and dangerous rhetoric.
In a democracy, debate and disagreement are essential. But when political disagreements turn into threats, intimidation, or violence, we all lose. No one should fear participating in civic life—whether attending a town hall, speaking out on issues, casting a vote, or running for office. The very fabric of our democracy depends on the safety and freedom of every person to engage without fear.
At a time when some seek to inflame divisions for political gain, we must all speak clearly: this is unacceptable. We each have a responsibility—especially those of us in public office—to reject language that dehumanizes, demonizes, or divides. Our words matter. Our actions matter.
I remain committed to doing my part to foster a politics grounded in respect, dialogue, and shared purpose—even when we disagree.
Thank you for standing with me in this work. Together, we can build a stronger, safer democracy for everyone.
Together, we can do anything,
