What happened to Senator Alex Padilla should terrify every American who believes in democracy.
On Thursday, Padilla — a sitting U.S. Senator — was handcuffed and forcibly removed from a press conference by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. His crime? Asking questions about the Trump administration’s ongoing military-style immigration raids that have sparked protests across California and the country.
Let’s be clear: this wasn’t just an attack on Padilla. It was an attack on the right to dissent.
Last week, Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted for defending her constituents outside a detention center. SEIU leader David Huerta was arrested and charged with a bogus felony while protesting in Los Angeles.
And still, Trump continues to ramp up ICE raids and militarize our communities. Enough. It’s time to say no more.
