I hear a lot of talk from my colleagues across the aisle about being pro-family. Their actions speak differently.

Let me explain what I mean by that.

The year after giving birth is one of the most vulnerable times in a woman’s life. In Arizona, 1 in 7 women reported symptoms of postpartum depression, and there’s significant risk of it going undiagnosed and untreated without proper post-natal care.

Most states have extended postpartum Medicaid coverage to one year, but that coverage is at risk. It’s one of the first programs states would cut if the GOP gets their way and pushes through hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid in this disaster of a budget.

Look, my wife just gave birth. She and our new son are doing great, but I cannot imagine if we did not have access to post-natal checkups over the next year. New moms on Medicaid and CHIP deserve that certainty. Republicans in Congress want to take it away.

I just introduced the Postpartum Lifeline Act to require 12 months of full postpartum health coverage under Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

This shouldn’t be political. It’s common sense. We want to encourage people to have families — and we should show up for them and provide the care moms desperately need after they give birth.

If you think that every mom on Medicaid and CHIP deserves 12 months of postpartum health coverage, add your name to this petition and say so. I’d love to have you with me here.
