Dear FairVote Minnesota Community,
As many of you know, Minnesota experienced an unimaginable tragedy this weekend.
Early Saturday morning, Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their home. Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot in their home and are now recovering following surgery. We are relieved to share that, thanks to swift work by law enforcement, the suspect was apprehended Sunday night.
This loss is devastating. Melissa was not only a trailblazing leader—she was a fierce champion for democracy, justice, and voting rights. She stood with us in the fight for Ranked Choice Voting and helped lead with courage and integrity through some of Minnesota’s most challenging and consequential political moments.
Her and Mark’s deaths, and the attack on the Hoffmans, are not just acts of personal violence—they are attacks on our democracy and the values we all fight to protect. There is no place for political violence.
We are grieving alongside their families, friends, legislative colleagues, and all who loved and worked with them. In the face of such pain, we’ve also seen Minnesotans come together—in sorrow, in solidarity, and with a renewed sense of purpose.
As we continue to mourn, we will find ways to honor Melissa’s legacy and recommit ourselves to the work of building a safer and more just, compassionate, and democratic society.
Please keep the Hortman and Hoffman families in your thoughts. We will share more in the days to come.
With heartbreak and resolve,
Jeanne
