 We should all be horrified by the brazen lawlessness we’re seeing from the Trump administration. Trump has deployed U.S. marines to police residential neighborhoods. His administration arrested a Congresswoman for doing her job overseeing an ICE facility. His allies have even tackled, roughed up, and handcuffed a sitting United States Senator for daring to question Trump’s indefensible actions. Today, families across the country are terrified as Trump sends ICE agents inside schools, hospitals, and places of worship. Even those who are in this country legally — including United States citizens — are worried about Trump’s continued disregard of court orders and due process. I promise to use every tool at my disposal to ensure all innocent, law-abiding people are protected from these injustices. I will continue to oppose using state and local law enforcement to carry out Trump’s dangerous anti-immigrant agenda. And I will use my position in Congress to stand up to Donald Trump’s worst impulses. For my entire career, I’ve proudly stood up for immigrant communities here in Colorado and across the country. I helped pass legislation in the state House to ensure Colorado’s law enforcement agencies don’t become an extension of ICE. And just last week, I voted against Republicans’ attempt to force DC law enforcement to coordinate with ICE officials. Our country desperately needs comprehensive immigration reform not only to keep our border secure, but also to create an orderly, safe process that treats people with dignity. Unfortunately, it’s clear that Donald Trump is not interested in order, but only chaos and cruelty. It is absolutely essential that we all stand up and speak out against these actions, and that, unlike the Trump administration, we do so peacefully.
