From Coop to Table: The True Cost of America’s Chicken Obsession
Chicken is often seen as the "healthier" choice, but the reality behind its rise is anything but simple. Industrial practices, selective breeding, and misleading labels have reshaped the poultry industry in ways that affect animals, workers, and public health. You'll find a breakdown of what’s really happening inside large-scale operations, what welfare certifications actually mean, and how your choices can support a food system that’s more honest, humane, and sustainable.

Iodine and Your Thyroid: Understanding the Workings of This Butterfly-Shaped Gland
Your thyroid sets the pace for everything from energy to metabolism, and iodine plays a central role in keeping it balanced. Too little can lead to fatigue, weight gain, and developmental issues in children—too much, especially from iodized salt, may increase the risk of nodules and even thyroid cancer. Here's how food, toxins, and everyday habits shape your thyroid health—and what you can do to support it.

During the first half of June 2025, AVFCA brought awareness to specific observance days by sharing our original stories that matched these themes:
World Environment Day: “History of Genetically Engineered (GE) Food and the Introduction of GE Soil Bacteria"
You wouldn’t be the first person to feel confused about the difference between GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and glyphosate. In fact, the two are intrinsically connected. In simple terms, glyphosate is an herbicide/pesticide that is sprayed onto crops, including those in the human/animal food supply, to keep critters and weeds away. Because glyphosate, a.k.a. “Roundup®” is so incredibly strong (and toxic), genetically engineering (modifying, manipulating …) the crop into a new version, enables it to endure and survive the heavy chemical application. http://tinyurl.com/genetically-engineered
World Food Safety Day: "Titanium Dioxide: Food Additive Runs Rampant as Nanoparticles Slip Through the Cracks”
As if titanium dioxide in its previous powder form wasn’t bad enough (posing multiple health risks), even worse is the compound in nanoparticle form. Using nanotechnology, scientists manipulate the molecules to become so tiny, they are invisible to the human eye. From there they are able to be inserted into a plethora of food and cosmetic products. http://tinyurl.com/titanium-dioxide
Global Wellness Day: “Bringing Sunscreen Into the Light: Ingredients, Cautions, and Smart Alternatives”
Conventional sunscreens come in two types—chemical and physical—and if you are lathering them on your kids’ bodies or yourself, you may be at risk for health conditions such as endocrine disruption, dermatitis, and oxidative stress. Taking in sunshine has numerous health benefits, including stabilizing vitamin D, boosting serotonin, and upleveling your mood. There are smart ways to protect your skin; some of which you may not yet be aware of. http://tinyurl.com/sunscreen-01
Our team also reads hundreds of articles each week, and those of interest are shared on our social media platforms. However, once or twice a week, our team reads an article that is profound or shares a perspective that is new or from an expert that AVFCA feels should be highlighted. These articles are shared on our Substack.
