John,

Did you know that our federal government spends more on our military than the top seven nations combined, reaching over $700 billion?

It begs the question: why do we spend so much on our military, rather than invest in health care, housing, and education — especially as our country struggles through an unprecedented public health crisis?

As the human, social, and financial cost of the COVID pandemic continues to mount, it shines a particularly harsh light on the federal government’s spending choices. At a time when more Americans have died from COVID than died in the entire Vietnam War, it is time to revisit our priorities.

We do not need to invest in military hardware and weapons for decade-old wars. What we do need is more funding for research, treatment, PPE equipment, and financial resources for families struggling to make ends meet.

That’s why I introduced a resolution to reduce wasteful Pentagon spending and put the money toward fighting the coronavirus.

It’s past time for Congress to rebalance our spending and provide for the most urgent needs of the American people. Join me in supporting my House resolution to cut the Pentagon budget and invest in the health and safety of people.

Our budget is not just a financial spreadsheet, it’s a reflection of our priorities as a nation. Now more than ever, we must invest in combating COVID-19, poverty, and the racial disparities happening in our communities.

Thank you for being part of this team. Together, we can fight for a country that meets everyone’s needs.

In solidarity,

Barbara Lee
