Dear JOhn,

One in five girls is married before they turn 18. But things are changing for the better, thanks to your support for women and girls’ equality and the commitment of dads like Peter, who lives with his daughter in rural Uganda.

Peter never had the opportunity to go to school. He married young and has worked hard all his life to support his family. But without an education, it’s been hard. Now, as a single parent, he wants his children to have the opportunities he never had. 

At 16-years-old, Peter’s daughter Annete already has many friends who are married with children. Peter and Annete are both determined she will break the cycle of poverty by finishing school, marrying when she chooses to and having the chance to fulfill her own ambitions. 

Peter believes in his daughter. 

Thanks to the support of our partner, Joy for Children, Peter understands that through education Annete can have a better life. He’s determined to see her graduate and reach her full potential.



He told us:

“I can see Annete wants to study so I am putting my efforts into supporting my daughter. She has the right to have a good life, to make her own money, to not have to beg for food on the road, and to be able to afford things like soap and clothes.”
