BC Strata Property Insurance Market: Interim Findings
BC Financial Services Authority
BC Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) reported its interim findings on the strata insurance market in British Columbia (BC). At the direction of the Province, BCFSA, as the financial services regulator, initiated inquiries with the insurance sector this year to determine the cause of market pricing changes. This report covers the first in-depth analysis of the issue throughout BC, with another expected in the Fall. You can find the full report here.

Commentary: CHBA BC participated in an industry roundtable for this issue in March. We are drafting a letter to the BCFSA to express our interest to participate in the next phases of this work, particularly with the new focus on new construction.

WorkSafeBC proposes adding presumptive claims for COVID-19 illness
Vancouver Sun
“Embedding public health costs in WorkSafeBC premiums could be ruinous for businesses who are unable to absorb any further fixed or variable cost increases because of the ongoing fallout from COVID-19, and could undermine the long-term financial stability of (WorkSafeBC),” read a response letter written this week from the Employers Forum.

Nonetheless, WorkSafeBC is fast-tracking the change during the pandemic.

Normally, adding a disease to what’s called Schedule 1 of the Workers’ Compensation Act takes up to two years and requires extensive scientific and medical research. This time, the brief, two-week public consultation ends June 12 and WorkSafeBC’s board will decide whether to proceed in July.

Commentary: CHBA BC, in addition to the many businesses listed in this article, submitted to this consultation indicating we do not support the proposed change.
