NEW LITIGATION: We Just Filed a Lawsuit to Stop the
Administration’s Illegal Coal Power Plant Bailout

The Trump administration gave some of the dirtiest coal power
plants in the country a free pass to ignore limits on the amount
of toxic emissions they can spew into our air.

There was no scientific basis, no public input, and no emergency.
Just a handout to polluters at the expense of our health and
climate future.

President Trump’s administration tried to undermine limits on
toxic air pollution before, and we took them to court. Help us do

Dear NRDC Supporter,

NRDC is rushing to court to stop the Trump administration
from giving dozens of coal-fired power plants a free pass to
ignore limits on toxic air pollution that are crucial to
protecting our health.

Supporters like you helped us secure these protections. We
defended limits on toxic air pollution when they last came under
attack. And now, we're fighting to stop this unlawful move before
it causes lasting harm.

The standards the Trump administration is trying to avoid
were put in place to limit toxic pollution from coal plants,
including mercury, arsenic, lead, and other air toxins that can
cause neurological damage in children, respiratory illness,
cancer, and premature death.

Since taking effect in 2012, these standards, known as
Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS), dramatically reduced
emissions and are estimated to save 11,000 lives every year. And
in 2024, the EPA strengthened these standards after thousands of
NRDC supporters and others submitted public comments and
testified in public hearings.

But to the fossil fuel industry, that progress is just a
threat to their bottom line. And the Trump administration is once
again doing their bidding.

During President Trump's first term, the EPA tried to
undermine the 2012 protections. We sued — and the attack failed.

Now they are back at it. And so are we. Will you support

Under the false pretense of an "energy emergency," the
administration is using executive powers to override these
critical pollution standards with no justification.

It's a blatant giveaway to polluters.

It's also part of a broader attempt by the administration
to weaken or eliminate a swath of regulations on coal-fired power
plants, and this lawsuit represents just one element of our
strategy to stop it.

We're fighting back on every front: mobilizing our network
of more than 3 million members to submit comments, exposing the
true nature — and benefactors — of this coal bailout in the
press, and arming pro-environmental allies with the science and
information they need to defend against this pollution free for
all.
