Hi john,
Welcome back to your Friday dose of feminist fun, as Abortion Access Front brings you the week’s latest and usually-not-so-greatest abortion news out there. The bright side? You’ve got the whole weekend for your eyes to roll back to where they belong after you’ve read it.
Major ewwws alert. Prepare yourselves.
No Care, No Coverage, No Choice: The Lie of "Protective" Abortion Bans
Anti-abortion zealots are always bleating that abortion bans are to PROTECT women and pregnant people; surprise, surprise—that’s complete bullshit! A study analyzing U.S. survey data [[link removed]] finds pregnant women in abortion-ban or restricted states are significantly more likely to be uninsured, unable to afford a doctor visit in the past year, and often without a personal healthcare provider! Of the 258,362 uninsured pregnant women in 2022, 62% lived in abortion-restricted states, particularly in Texas, Arkansas, and Florida.
A dark blue graphic with bold yellow and teal text at the top that reads, “In 2022, 62% of pregnant people with no health insurance lived in states that restrict abortion.” Below the text are three U.S. maps showing state-by-state data: Panel A shows the percentage of uninsured pregnant people, Panel B shows the percentage who forgone doctor care, and Panel C shows the percentage without a personal doctor. Darker shades on the maps indicate worse outcomes, with Southern and Midwestern states showing the highest levels of uninsurance and lack of care. A small text note at the bottom credits the source: AJPM, “Healthcare Access among Pregnant Women in States with and without Abortion Restrictions.” The Abortion Access Front’s red “Ten Years of AAF” logo appears in the bottom right corner. [[link removed]]
They can’t leave it there, of course—if the Trump admin passes the Big Bullshit Bill, it includes a provision barring insurers from receiving Cost-Sharing Reduction (CSR) payments—a key federal subsidy—IN EVERY STATE if they offer abortion coverage in their ACA marketplace plans. That means no matter where you live, abortion coverage could be dumped from your insurance plan. For claiming to be the “leave it to the states” people, they sure seem to still be trying to screw the states in literally every way possible.
Soooo You Want Us to Report Our Miscarriages to The PoPo? Oh Hell NoNo.
If we’re giving out awards for the worst advice, then Raleigh County Prosecutor Tom Truman takes the gold for suggesting that if you’re miscarrying your pregnancy… you should just give the COPS a heads up so you don’t get jailed for it [[link removed]] . We have zero law degrees here at AAF, but we’re pretty damn confident that a) it’s none of the state’s fucking business what happens with our pegnancies, and b) IT’S NONE OF THE STATE’S FUCKING BUSINESS WHAT HAPPENS WITH OUR PREGNANCIES!
[[link removed]]
Here’s the real point: miscarriages are common, often unavoidable [[link removed]] , happen in toilets, and should NOT be treated like crimes. We refuse to buy-in to whatever dystopian reporting means we have to register anything that comes out of our pleasure pocket, okay?
