*MADISON, Wis.* – With Father’s Day weekend fast approaching, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and utility terrain vehicle (UTV) riders to make safety part of their outdoor fun.

Warmer weather, longer days and holiday celebrations are likely to make for busy trails. The DNR urges all riders to ride sober and watch their speed. Last year, there were 21 alcohol-related ATV/UTV deaths [ [link removed] ] in Wisconsin. Many of these tragic crashes could be prevented by following the rules of safe riding, with sober operation being one of the most important.

Riding smart isn’t just about keeping yourself safe. You never know how your actions can influence younger riders.

“It’s really important for folks to consider who they might be influencing when they’re getting on their machines,” said Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, Wisconsin DNR off-highway vehicle administrator. “Parents, older siblings and grandparents are all setting an example for the younger generation of riders.

"When they see an older rider without a helmet or seatbelt, they might think it’s okay for them to do the same. We want to provide our young riders with an example of how to be a safe operator.”

Some safety tips to keep in mind when operating your recreational vehicle include:

* Never consume alcohol or drugs before or during your ride.
* Do not travel in unfamiliar areas.
* Follow all posted speed limits and regulatory signs.
* Let someone not riding with you know where you are going and when you will return.

One of the most important things is to complete a DNR-approved safety education course. Learn more about ATV/UTV riding in Wisconsin, including how to sign up for a safety class on the DNR's ATV/UTV webpage [ [link removed] ].
