Hello friend,
It’s the big news no-one is talking about. South Sudan, a country devastated by years of conflict and war, flooding and economic crisis, has been sued in the London High Court by one of its largest commercial lenders for $657 million! [1]
I find this news so hard to stomach. South Sudan is facing one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world. Pushed to the brink of economic collapse, now a London court has ordered the government to fork out nearly 50% of its revenue over high-interest loans made during the pandemic.
friend, we urgently need a new debt justice law in the UK that would stop predatory lenders from suing countries in debt crisis. On 9 July, we have a big opportunity to lobby MPs over the urgent need for action. Will you join us?

There are 53 more lower-income countries like South Sudan – trapped in debt and forced to choose between payments to wealthy lenders and the basic public services and support that people need.
James Wani, South Sudan Country Director of Christian Aid explains how:
** “...the government cannot and should not prioritise maintaining onerous debt repayments over investments in the basic needs of South Sudan’s citizens. Yet, it seems that instead of our country getting debt relief to help deal with these crises, we are getting sued by the creditor. This is intolerable.”

It’s time to put an end to this outrageous behaviour by commercial lenders. The mass lobby on 9 July is a rare opportunity for us to join forces with thousands of others to speak to our elected representatives on the same day about the need to tackle the debt crisis. It can be hugely powerful – and we know it works.
friend, if you haven’t already signed up to join us, just click the button and follow the instructions to register via our website. You’ll receive all the support and training you need to speak to your MP about the need for action on the debt crisis.
Join the mass lobby of parliament on Wednesday 9 July ([link removed])
This is our chance to turn the tide on the debt crisis for good. I believe that together, we can make it happen.
In solidarity,
Wiz, Eva, Tim, Zak and everyone at Debt Justice
