John, by now, you have probably seen the pictures and videos of my fellow Senator from California and friend Alex Padilla getting forcefully removed from and handcuffed at a DHS press conference.
The actions of Kristi Noem’s security detail were shocking and disgraceful.
I watched this video with horror, seeing agents grab Alex Padilla, pushing him out of the public press conference after he had identified himself as a U.S. Senator, dragging him into a hallway, bringing him down to the ground, putting his arms behind his back, and placing him in handcuffs.
I am shocked by how far we have descended in just the first 140 days of this administration.
We have a president calling on the National Guard over the objection of a governor to try to intimidate and interfere with law enforcement in California. A president calling in the Marines to try to inflame tensions in our city. And now this latest act, when a U.S. Senator goes to demand questions about the lawfulness or lawlessness of these actions, to see him brought to the ground and handcuffed.
What is becoming of our democracy? Are there no limits to what this administration will do?
John, all Alex was trying to do was ask a question and do his job of oversight. He’s demanding accountability and transparency into the actions of the Department of Homeland Security. He has every right to do so.
That the administration’s response was to forcefully remove him points to the very dangerous path our country is heading down.
Alex Padilla is one of the most decent people I know. One of the most dedicated public servants I know, and someone of the greatest character. He embodies public service. He comes from very humble origins, and he has never forgotten those roots. And the beauty of this country is that you can come from a very humble origin, and you could end up here.
So while Alex and I continue to demand accountability from this administration and fight for Californians, please pitch in to our campaigns to help us keep up this incredibly important work.
