Dear John,
The U.S. has obtained new intelligence that Israel is preparing for military strikes on Iran, according to CNN [[link removed]] . If true, we are in an incredibly dangerous moment and are responding now with urgency to stave off a war that would destroy millions of lives and devastate Iran’s land and people for generations.
We need to treat these reports carefully because Netanyahu and his hawkish supporters in Washington have been leveraging threats like this for years, often to force the hand of U.S. administrations. In this case, the reporting claims Israel will attack even if the U.S. secures a nuclear deal that doesn’t meet Netanyahu’s maximalist, unnecessary, and likely unattainable ultimatums like “zero enrichment.” This may be Netanyahu attempting to box Trump into war with Iran, effectively saying: “either you tank the Iran talks with poison pill demands or I will tank them for you.”
This may also be a deliberate leak by U.S. officials trying to bolster their negotiating position by Iran by waging indirect threats, telling Iran: “our hands are tied, either agree to Israel’s terms for a deal or there will be war.”
However, while we need to treat these threats soberly, we also must take them seriously because the stakes are too high. Millions of lives are on the line.
That is why NIAC and our allies are mobilizing to support a diplomatic solution that is within reach and which can end the threat of war and the suffering of sanctions, and position Iranians and Americans on a path to a brighter future.
