Dear friends and partners,

Graduation season is always one of the most joyful and inspiring times of year. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the honor of celebrating with students, families, and staff at ceremonies across our district. Each graduate’s journey is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of community—and this year, that spirit feels especially profound.

Because while we gather to honor these milestones, we’re also witnessing the devastating reality of increased ICE activity and the deployment of the National Guard in our city. As I said to graduates this week: those actions may reflect the worst of this country—but our students, their families, and their diverse communities represent the very best.

LAUSD remains unwavering in our commitment to keeping schools safe and welcoming for every student, regardless of immigration status or background. As we gear up for another exciting summer of learning for our students, you can find more information about the added safety measures and resources for families in need of support.

Amid both the challenges and celebrations of this year, our work continues. Next week, the Board will vote on the District’s annual budget, as well as a resolution I am bringing to commemorate Pride Month and affirm our solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. In a moment when so many are being targeted for who they are, it’s more important than ever for public institutions like ours to lead with courage and compassion.

Congratulations to the Class of 2025—thanks to you, the future is bright!
