Friend,
This afternoon, California Senator Alex Padilla tried to ask a
question at Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s
press conference in LA — only to be forcibly removed from the room,
pushed to the floor, and handcuffed.1,2
"If this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a
senator with a question, you can only imagine what they’re doing to
farmworkers, to cooks, to day laborers throughout the country,” Sen.
Padilla said.
Members of Congress and people across the country are
calling for Secretary Noem — who is implementing the worst of Trump’s
attacks on immigrants and our democracy — to resign.
Add
your name to the Jewish petition to amplify the call: Kristi Noem,
resign now.
Trump and his cronies have had immigrant students thrown to the
ground and abducted for speaking freely. They’ve had U.S. citizens
thrown to the ground and jailed for speaking freely. Today
they threw a U.S. Senator to the ground and handcuffed him for
speaking freely.
When students ask questions, they’re asking on
behalf of the future. It’s their job and their right. When
protestors ask questions, they’re asking on behalf of
the immigrants who are woven into the fabric of their communities.
It’s their job and their right. When U.S. Senators
ask questions, they are asking on behalf of the millions of Americans
they represent. It’s their job and their right.
Today, Kristi Noem proved what we’ve been saying all along: when
they come for the most vulnerable of us, they will come for all of us
eventually. And when they come for the most powerful of us, they’re
coming for all of us sooner than we think.
As Jews, we’ve seen this before. It’s why many of us came
to a nation that defends free speech, not arrests, cages
and deports you for it. And it’s why we’re taking action
now.
