In this time of great turmoil, it can be difficult to count our victories. Indeed, good news feels so rare right now. But, John, the landmark ruling handed down by the Supreme Court on Monday was a huge win.
The ruling will change how millions of LGBTQ Americans live and work in their country—in our country. No longer can our fellow citizens be discriminated against by a business or place of work on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
This ruling, from a conservative-leaning Supreme Court, is a pleasant and welcome surprise, especially during this Pride Month.
To me, there are two big takeaways from this judgment—which some are aptly calling a “watershed moment.”
1. Young people have always been at the forefront of social change. As they are doing now with the Black Lives Matter movement, young people have led for decades and continue to lead the fight for LBGTQ equality. I am grateful to them, and I am inspired by them.
2. Protesting is important. Having tough conversations with our family members and friends about issues of equality is important. Listening and learning are important. But so too is political engagement and political action. As we all know, one of the greatest powers of the presidency is the power to appoint Supreme Court justices, along with the hundreds of other judicial appointments they get to make. To be blunt: we can’t afford to give Donald Trump another four years to handpick any more federal judges or Supreme Court justices.
So I encourage you all to take a moment to celebrate this big win—and then to get back in the fight. We have a long few months ahead, and this moment demands all of us working together, and doing as much as we can, to create the lasting change we want to see in America.
