Let’s be clear about this, John:

Everything that’s happening in Los Angeles right now is about seizing more power. And that’s always been the goal.

Donald Trump is signaling to the American people that he will not let rules or laws stop him from what he really wants — a military police state where he can suppress speech, violate our right to protest, and silence our ability to speak out against injustice.

Little by little, he is eroding what we see as norms as he seeks unchecked and unchallenged power for himself.

The last time the National Guard was deployed in a state without the governor’s permission was 1965, John — 60 years ago. And now Trump is threatening to arrest the governor of California for, rightfully, calling him out over not having the authority to deploy National Guard troops in California.

As a former history teacher, I can tell you that this is straight out of the authoritarian playbook — and that should be a wake-up call for all of us.

Trump wants us to give in and give up, but that is the last thing we can do at a moment like this. We need to keep using our voices and fighting for what’s right to make sure he knows that we will never let him turn America into an autocratic state.
