Washington, DC - This week, OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates is celebrating the landmark decision affirming the civil rights of queer and transgender communities. OCA released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s recent 6-3 decision including sexual orientation and gender identity in workplace nondiscrimination protections:
“The affirmation of queer and trans rights in the workplace is a sweeping win, not just for LGBTQ+ communities but for setting legal precedent,” says Rita Pin Ahrens, Executive Director of OCA. “Already, Education Secretary DeVos is being forced to revisit harmful rules that limit the freedoms of transgender students - we hope to see similar movement for LGBTQ+ individuals’ right to equal treatment in housing and healthcare.”
Maddie Schumacher, Senior Policy & Advocacy Associate also adds “While queer and trans people know that we don’t need the courts to validate our humanity, it is a critical measure for us to be protected under the law. Five years after the landmark ruling allowing equal marriage, OCA is indebted to the advocates who have pushed for these protections for decades.”
OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national civil rights organization dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).
