Abraham Lincoln understood the predicament we face because it is not new.
He said the gravest danger that we face as Americans does not come from the threat of foreign subjugation, but rather the possibility of national suicide:
“At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reaches us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men, we must live through all time or die by suicide.”
Donald Trump has mutilated the Republican Party, twisting it into an authoritarian cult of personality that is a threat to liberty. He incited civil unrest in California and deployed the US military against the American people to stamp it out.
This weekend, Trump will desecrate the 250th birth of the United States Army with a grotesque display of narcissism, which is an affront to democratic values and American character.
M1 Abrams battle tanks will roll through the streets of Washington, DC, to deliver a message that Trump has the power to demand obedience, love, and respect at the tip of the spear.
The message of the parade is simple:
Fear Trump and stay in line.
Obey.
Do not dissent. Do not speak out.
Donald Trump is asserting the US military belongs to him, and not the nation that he is threatening with it. Donald Trump is advancing the proposition that the American soldier, sailor, airman, marine, guardian, and Coast Guardsman is loyal to Trump above the US Constitution. What Donald Trump is demanding is veneration and obedience to him as he declares that he is the law, the Constitution, and the nation.
Donald Trump’s antics, madness, and aggression show both his weakness and impotence.
American presidents defend freedom from tyranny.
Trump is an un-American disgrace, a moral abomination, and a threat to the Republic.
He is a tyrant leading an extremist movement that has declared war on the US Constitution.
