*Dear Neighbors,*
June is Pride Month and I’d like to acknowledge that with the increasing political attacks on our LGBTQ+ neighbors, it's more important than ever that we stand up for and celebrate every member of our diverse community.
I am currently in the process of planning a Town Hall this summer and will let you know when the details are finalized. I look forward to seeing you there!
Legislative Activity
Earlier this week we concluded our one-day special session to pass the rest of our state budget and wrap up our work for the year. The final bills we passed reflect our closely divided government in that they are true compromises.
I’m pleased to report that all or portions of 8 of the bills I authored during the 2025 session will be signed into law. These bills, most of which were included in finance bills, do the following:
* Ensure that those who are in assisted living facilities receive the services that they paid for (constituent driven)
* Bolster use of anonymous threat reporting systems that make our schools and communities safer from gun violence. Learn about the Minnesota BCA’s app [ [link removed] ] here
* Provide needed funding for the Department of Corrections to ensure correction officers are compensated and incarcerated people are safely housed
* Protect due process rights of family day care providers (constituent driven)
* Ensure public safety through the Public Safety policy bill containing a bipartisan mix of bills
* Protect the privacy of victims of domestic violence in their confidential communications with advocates
* Establish a new account to fund victim services to ensure public safety in Minnesota
* Create an ombudsperson position to help homeowners and board members in Homeowner Associations understand the laws and resolve conflicts
In my role as the co-chair of the Public Safety Committee, I also helped craft the Public Safety budget, which passed in May. You can read about that bill in my last update.
Additionally, I supported the budget bills that keep the state functioning. The main theme of this session was DFLers standing up for middle and working class Minnesotans. We protected massively popular and needed legislation like paid family & medical leave, universal school meals, strong gun violence prevention laws, and so much more. In all, given the nature of the tie, I feel this session was a success and keeps Minnesota on track to grow and improve.

Unfortunately, the top priority for the House GOP was stripping health care from undocumented Minnesotans. The House GOP members were willing to shut down the government over this. Much like the attacks on immigrants from the Trump administration, their arguments were not based on facts and were grounded in cruelty. By kicking adults off of MinnesotaCare (a program where participants pay into and have co-pays), all of us and our hospitals will now be forced to pick up the slack when people seek emergency room care that could have been prevented. I voted against this measure in the Special Session, but it passed as part of the leadership agreement.
Meeting with constituents
Recently I was glad to meet with students on a field trip from Turtle Lake Elementary. One student asked me if I could draft a bill to ensure that the Timberwolves win (I wish!). Another group expressed concerns about federal cuts to Meals on Wheels. I love meeting with and hearing from students. Even though they aren’t old enough to vote, civic engagement should be encouraged.

Trump Continues to harm Minnesotans
Trump and the Congressional Republicans are trying to fund tax breaks for billionaires by decreasing Medicaid benefits that would result in a substantial harm to Minnesotans. At the same time, we have seen Trump unnecessarily escalating immigration enforcement across the country without regard to the Constitution and other laws. Americans everywhere should be peacefully speaking out and standing up for our democracy and constitutional rights.
Disposing of Medication
During Minnesota’s last Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, over 5 tons of old medications were collected! While impressive, the next take-back day isn’t until October. To bridge that gap, MyOldMeds.com [ [link removed] ] makes it easy for Minnesota residents to locate free year-round disposal sites across the state.
The site features 510 disposal locations in Minnesota, including 10 options in our community, part of a nationwide network of more than 29,000 disposal sites. By simply entering their ZIP code, residents can instantly locate a nearby drop-off location through the MyOldMeds locator tool [ [link removed] ].
