Dear John,

You’ve probably heard that pronghorn are fast. In fact, they’re the fastest hoofed mammal in North America, clocking speeds up to 60 mph. But sadly, they often lose the race across highways to avoid oncoming traffic.

Earlier this year, we celebrated a huge win for pronghorn and New Mexico’s wildlife with the allocation of $50 million to state agencies for wildlife crossings and other projects to enhance or restore connected wildlife habitats throughout the state. Wins like these mean more pronghorn and a more resilient network of life.

This is the type of outcome you can expect when you make an investment in Wildlands Network.

In fact, Wildlands Network has been leading the effort to reconnect the West’s landscapes for wildlife for over three decades. As the Western Program Director, I’ve been part of incredible wins for wildlife, but I also see looming challenges that need our collective attention right now.

One of those is the spread of large-scale solar energy projects, covering tens of thousands of acres. Our team is tracking the movement and behavior of pronghorn around these projects to understand how more strategically designed projects can reduce harm to wildlife.

The continued construction and militarization of the border wall is another threat we’re closely monitoring. We’ve been working with partners to document impacts from the wall on wildlife – and we have used that data to urge inclusion of additional small wildlife passages for animals to utilize.

Now more than ever, wildlife need us.
