Hi,
Moments ago, the House of Representatives voted to cut more than $1
billion from public broadcasting.^1
If approved by the Senate, these cuts will be a crippling blow for local
public radio and TV stations around the country.
Public radio stations that broadcast award-winning shows like This
American Life and All Things Considered will be forced to shut down.
Especially in rural areas, the beloved early childhood educational
programs we all know and love will no longer be available.
Demand Progress has already mobilized tens of thousands of people to help
in the fight to save public media, and with these devastating cuts now
going to the Senate, we must ramp up our efforts.

Last month, Donald Trump issued an executive order to "cease Federal
funding" for public broadcasting, which he denounced as a "taxpayer-funded
propaganda machine for the radical left" and the "messaging arm for woke,
radical Democrats."^2,3
Then earlier today, the House approved a package to claw back $1.1 billion
appropriated to public broadcasting during the Biden administration.^4
This is money that local stations are absolutely counting on. Many small
town and rural stations rely on federal money for as much as half of their
budget, and for them the rescission of these funds will be a fatal blow.^5
Millions of kids will no longer have access to award-winning early
educational programming. Public radio stations will fall silent. Remote
rural and Indigenous communities will lose access to emergency broadcast
alerts.^6
Trump's goal isn't just to cut the budget. He wants to crush any
independent media outlet that dares to challenge him. It's all part of his
authoritarian assault on democracy and the free press.
Demand Progress is working to flood Capitol Hill with petition signatures
and phone calls to help stop these cuts. With these cuts now headed to the
Senate, this could be our last chance fight to save public media.
