Sign the Petition: America isn’t a dictatorship, and we won’t let Donald Trump turn us into one. Speak out NOW >>
John, federal agents just assaulted and handcuffed a sitting U.S. Senator.
Here’s what we know so far: Sen. Alex Padilla of California had questions about Trump’s crackdown on his constituents in Los Angeles. So he went to Secretary Kristi Noem’s press conference to ask them.
In response, he was violently shoved to the ground face-down, handcuffed, and detained. [1]
We’re closely following this story – as well as what is happening in Los Angeles – but this is a moment where every American needs to make a clear choice: do we want to be a nation of laws, or are we governed by the whims of one man?
Join us to tell Congress: We stand with Senator Padilla and urge every single one of you to speak out against Trump’s abuses with the same urgency >>
Ever since Trump took office, Common Cause has been calling on Congress to boldly speak up for our rights. Sen. Padilla just did that – and now this administration is lashing out and trying to make an example out of him.
This should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: if a United States Senator can be treated like this, none of us are truly safe.
Trump has spent all week, and all year, pushing the boundaries. He's throwing the full force and weight of our government against people who peacefully oppose him, and brazenly violating our nation's laws in pursuit of absolute power.
Government silencing its critics. Soldiers patrolling our streets. People getting snatched away from their families. None of this is supposed to happen in a democracy.
They’re the actions of a tyrant, and the only way we’ll keep our country from descending into dictatorship is if we speak out loudly and clearly with one voice.
Add your name today: I stand with Sen. Padilla and condemn President Trump’s abuse of power to stifle our right to free speech >>
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
