Los Angeles is showing us how democracy fights back.
This week, protests have erupted across the city, sparked by recent ICE
raids as part of the Trump administration’s wider anti-immigrant
crackdown. These raids have been designed to instill fear and erase
belonging.
The community has responded with an incredible show of people power.
Thousands have taken to the streets to defend their neighbors, their
communities, and to reject the cruelty happening right in front of them.
Seeing this, the authorities have responded with force. Police have fired
rubber bullets at demonstrators. The National Guard has been deployed. And
now, the Marines are on their way.
Protesting works,
John. That’s exactly why the
Trump administration is threatening to unleash the full weight of the
military to crush these protests. To send a broader signal to every
American that they will not tolerate any dissent.
This isn’t about law and order. It’s about control. And the people being
targeted — first immigrants, and now organizers and protesters — are the
same ones our democracy is relying on.
Today, we stand with those protesting in Los Angeles. In the face of such
adversity and violence, their courage is admirable and proof that
protecting our democracy requires us to show up and speak out — now more
important than it’s ever been before.
