President's Message

It’s hard to believe this is my final President’s message in the Weekly Digest. In observance of Juneteenth, NASN2025, and the July 4th holiday, the Digest will pause and return after the virtual conference.

As I reflect on my time with NASN, one thing has remained most important to me: making a difference. During my service to NASN, school nurses, and, most importantly, students, my focus has been on advocacy, equity, and inclusivity. Any progress made has been the result of our shared commitment and collective effort.

I look forward to celebrating the power of school nursing with many of you in Austin in two weeks and virtually, July 7–9. Our strength lies in our expertise, our united voice, and the trust placed in us. Together, we are stronger.

Thank you for the privilege of serving. I know you will each continue to make a difference—and carry forward NASN’s vision: That all students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

Kate King, DNP, MS, RN, LSN

NASN News and Highlights

NASN Statement on Vaccine Advisory Panel Dismissals

NASN is deeply concerned by the recent decision of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to dismiss all 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This unprecedented action risks undermining the public’s trust in a process that has safeguarded the health of generations. The ACIP has long played a critical role in reviewing scientific evidence and ensuring that immunization guidelines are informed by rigorous research, diverse clinical expertise, and public transparency. NASN urges decision-makers to preserve science-based advisory processes and resist actions that politicize public health. View the statement.

The Challenges Adolescent Women Face When Using High School Bathrooms

School nurses are in a unique position to influence policies related to bathroom use through educating administrators, teachers, and students on the importance of voiding in conjunction with biological urge. In this month's Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) podcast, Mayumi Willgerodt, editor of JOSN, interviews author Elissa Allen to discuss the article, "Adolescent Women's Perspectives on Barriers and Facilitators to High School Bathroom Use."  Listen now.
