(KENT, Ohio)—Lt. Governor Jim Tressel is continuing his visits across Ohio to evaluate the workforce strengths and needs of each region of the state.
Today’s stop was at the Kent State University (KSU) Main Campus, where the Lt. Governor toured both the KSU Airport and the College of Aeronautics and Engineering. KSU offers hands-on training in aeronautics and aviation, including in advanced power systems, automation, manufacturing, and digital tools.
"It was great to be back on another Kent State campus today - especially one doing such impressive work in a high-demand industry in Ohio," said Lt. Governor Tressel. "They're not just preparing students to lead in areas like advanced aviation and air mobility, but they're helping train the next generation and keeping Ohio at the forefront of an industry that's taking off across the state."

Thanks to the state’s targeted efforts to attract economic development projects to local communities, Ohio has added more than 81,000 private sector jobs over the past six years. In addition, at least 15,000 additional jobs are coming to Ohio through projects currently in development.
Ohio has a rich history and a strong presence in the aerospace and aviation industries and is home to leading companies like GE Aerospace, Sierra Nevada Corporation, and Joby Aviation, each contributing to innovation and growth across the sector.
To ensure Ohio's workforce is prepared to meet this rising demand, Governor Mike DeWine announced that Lt. Governor Tressel would lead the development of Ohio's Workforce Playbook [ [link removed] ]. By examining the needs and circumstances of Ohio’s various regions, the playbook will establish a plan to retain existing talent, recruit new talent to Ohio, and rally Ohio’s existing workforce to greater productivity.

Since 2019, Kent State has experienced a significant increase in enrollment in its College of Aeronautics and Engineering. The college is nationally recognized for its unique integration of aeronautics, engineering, and engineering technology, including having one of the largest professional pilot programs and the largest collegiate aircraft fleet in Ohio. KSU offers pathway programs with nearly every major airline, and prepares students for a wide range of careers in air traffic control, aviation management, UAS operations, and aeronautical studies.
Today's stop follows the Lt. Governor's visit to the Geauga Campus of Kent State University [ [link removed] ] on Monday where he toured the regional campus's nursing school and convened a group of local leaders to discuss their workforce successes and challenges.
"We were honored to host Lt. Governor Jim Tressel for visits this week to our Geauga and Kent campuses to learn more about Kent State University’s contributions to Ohio's current and future workforce needs," said KSU President Todd Diacon. "During the Lt. Governor’s first visit to a university regional campus, he saw how Kent State is partnering with local health care providers to prepare nurses and other health care professionals who will find jobs and careers immediately upon graduation. Kent State’s seven regional campuses provide a great value for the State of Ohio and are the workforce creators for the Northeast Ohio region."

While on his tour, he saw how we are producing graduates that will meet the in-demand jobs of the aviation and aerospace industry, including professional pilots and air traffic controllers," President Todd Diacon added. "He also had the opportunity to learn more about KSU Center for Advanced Air Mobility, which is working collaboratively to support the State of Ohio’s Drive Ohio initiative. Additionally, as an R1 research institution, he experienced the renowned research that is being conducted on our campus that supports defense and national security interests of the United States."
Kent State University has received support from the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s RAPIDS and Super RAPIDS grant programs to fund equipment upgrades to a variety of programs, including advanced manufacturing, to suit regional workforce training needs.
