John,
Many of us are constituents of senators and representatives who are certain to vote against the Congressional Republicans’ disastrous budget. While it’s still important to let them know you support their stance, there is a way to do more. You can reach out to like-minded people whose members of Congress are expected to vote for the big brutal budget bill, and encourage these voters to call their reps and urge a no vote. You can help make sure Senators know their constituents strongly oppose cuts to health care, nutrition, and other basic needs in order to pay for massive tax cuts for the rich.
This week, we’re partnering with our allies at People’s Action―giving folks in Democratic districts the ability to call voters in key states with Republican Senators.
Click here to sign-up to call voters in key states tonight at 6pm ET, urging them to contact their Senator and stop this disastrous GOP budget.

Each day, we learn more about what is in this enormous bill and its impact on vulnerable communities. This week, the Senate Agriculture Committee released details about its proposed cuts to SNAP nutrition benefits. Their cuts are deep and far-reaching: 8 million people will still lose some or all benefits, including 2.5 million children.
Like the House version, the Senate committee would shift billions of dollars in costs to states, forcing most states either to cut SNAP or cut other programs. Work reporting requirements are expanded to more people, and the red tape roadblocks will mean people who really are eligible will lose benefits. SNAP benefits will become less responsive to the actual costs of nutritious meals over time. (They now average only a little more than $6 per person per day.)
We don’t yet know how the Senate will seek to cut health programs, or the details of its multi-trillion dollar tax breaks, but the direction is clear: harsh, dangerous cuts to health care, nutrition, and other basic needs, while fueling militarized anti-immigrant actions and providing unaffordable tax breaks for the wealthy.
There is growing understanding that these cuts are unpopular, and you can encourage constituents in red states to carry that message to their own Senators.
Whether you’ve made phone calls to other voters or not, don’t worry. Our friends at People’s Action will train you on the ins and outs of having meaningful conversations with folks in different parts of the country. These conversations could make the difference in flipping just enough votes to stop the bill.
Click here to sign-up and make calls with our allies at People’s Action tonight (Thursday, June 12) at 6pm ET.
Thank you for all that you do to power our campaign to demand investments in human needs, not more tax breaks for billionaires and corporations.
