John,
BREAKING NEWS: Politico just reported that Congress is planning to introduce legislation to immediately stop the use of facial recognition surveillance in the United States.1
This is a huge opportunity, but we’re going to face enormous opposition from Big Tech and the government. Will you chip in $5 (or more!) today to help us pass this bill?
DONATE TO STOP FACIAL RECOGNITION
We’ve been sounding the alarm for months that facial recognition is a uniquely dangerous type of surveillance. It enables governments and corporations to monitor us in deeply invasive ways and violate our rights at a mass scale.
Facial recognition is being used right now to target protesters who are exercising their First Amendment rights, and it’s even being experimented with in our children’s schools, in airports, and in stores like Wal-Mart and Home Depot.2,3,4
Up until now, Congress has basically failed to do its job on this issue. We’ve seen a few fake, industry-backed bills full of loopholes and not much else. But with protests sweeping the country and many communities explicitly calling for an end to discriminatory surveillance, things are shifting in DC. And now even big companies like IBM, Amazon, and Microsoft are distancing themselves from this politically toxic technology.5
We have a once in a lifetime chance to pass real legislation to stop a facial recognition surveillance dystopia. But it’s going to a massive campaign like the ones we ran for SOPA and net neutrality. Will you chip in today to help us win?
We want to go all in to pass this bill. Are you with us?
For a future with basic freedom,
Evan at Fight for the Future
P.S. We know many people are unable to donate right now due to financial difficulties and other obligations. If that’s you, we understand! You can still help by taking action and sharing BanFacialRecognition.com –– If you’re lucky enough to still be collecting a salary during these challenging times, please consider making a donation, knowing that many others can’t.
P.P.S. People often ask how we use donations. Great question! You can check out our financial breakdowns here. Generally speaking campaign funds go to things like delivering emails and driving phone calls to Congress, hiring activists to get the Internet mobilized, and covering costs like web hosting, design, video creation, coalition building, and press outreach.
