John,I’m fuming, but you need to see this:

The official White House account is dehumanizing immigrants as ‘foreign invaders’ and demanding folks turn in their friends, coworkers, and neighbors, to be jailed in inhumane holding areas as the Department of Homeland Security violates every last one of their rights. It’s a disgusting attack on people who do more for Americans than these criminals ever have.

Tragically, none of this is entirely unexpected: Donald Trump laid this vision out during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, and I called it out back then. But it is horrific to watch unfold in real time all the same.

That’s especially true for each of us. Californians don’t have to look hard to see echoes of one of our most shameful parts of our history – the internment of Japanese and Asian-Americans in the 1940s, with over 120,000 Americans inhumanely held in concentration camps in Tule Lake and Manzanar.

So let me be clear:

Our neighbors are not for sale.

Our streets are not for military combat.

And we’re long past tolerating any more of MAGA’s race-baiting, xenophobia, and devotion to White Supremacy.

I stood up to Trump’s Administration as your Controller, and it’s critical that I and every one of us do it right now.

And as governor, you have my word that I will not give Trump and his cronies a second of oxygen to play racial grievance politics with our lives; California will always be a firewall against extreme attacks on our state.

But until that day, keep showing up. Keep speaking up. And don’t tolerate a second of this divisive anti-immigrant fearmongering from anyone.
