This weekend's riots in Los Angeles in response to the arrest of several alleged illegal immigrants with criminal records by federal authorities reminds us that the "thin blue line" is very thin indeed.

News of the fairly small federal enforcement action spread quickly amongst opponents of immigration enforcement, and based on the flags and signs, a host of other political causes as well, resulting in days of riots, assaults, arsons, and vandalism.

Medicare’s Price Controls Are Fueling America’s Growing Doctor Shortage

June 11, 2025

PRI's Center for Medical Economics and Innovation this week released a new issue brief warning that continued federal underpayment of doctors is fueling a looming healthcare crisis by accelerating the nation’s physician shortage and undermining access to care.

Written by PRI senior fellow in business and economics and CMEI director Dr. Wayne Winegarden, the brief (titled “It’s Time for Medicare to Stop Shortchanging Physicians”) finds that Medicare reimbursement rates are well below market value and have failed to keep up with inflation or the rising costs of running a medical practice. This undercompensating is leading doctors to leave the profession, dissuading medical students from entering the field, and contributing to longer wait times and diminished care quality for patients.

Reparations Bill Back, Opposed by Everyone

Two important events recently happened on the “reparations” beat. First, the U.S. House, led by Representative Ayanna Pressley, re-introduced H.R. 40, “federal legislation to study reparations for slavery.” At the same time, 2024-25 data began to circulate widely – showing greatly increased opposition to reparations and support for President Donald Trump among minorities.
