Dear NRDC Activist,
The Trump administration announced plans yesterday that will give dirty coal- and gas-fired power plants looser reins to emit pollution while the rest of us pay the price, worsening climate change, fueling more extreme weather events, and causing more health problems for more people in communities across the country.
These two new proposals from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would eliminate standards for carbon pollution and weaken Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS), endangering millions of Americans.
NRDC's legal team is considering every one of our options to fight back, including going to court if that's what it takes to compel the agency to fulfill its legal responsibilities to the American people — but in the meantime, we need your help.
The EPA will be seeking comments on these two dangerous plans — and we must mobilize a massive public outcry calling on the agency to reverse course and keep critical power plant standards in place.
Power plants are responsible for one-third of U.S. climate-busting carbon emissions. With these disastrous plans, the EPA is trying to claim that carbon emissions from these dirty power plants are "insignificant" even though these standards would have saved thousands of lives.
And standards were put in place to limit mercury, arsenic, lead, and other air toxins from power plants that can cause neurological damage in children, respiratory illness, and premature death.
Repealing these standards is just the latest in an unprecedented barrage of attempts by the Trump administration to roll back fundamental environmental protections — including plans to strike down the foundational EPA finding that climate change endangers human health and welfare.
It's not just the EPA's job to protect our air — the agency is legally obligated to under the Clean Air Act.
Please, send an urgent message to the EPA right away.
Together we've fought for limits on power plant pollution before — in fact, these are the same standards that tens of thousands of activists like you fought hard to pass to help save lives and tackle the climate crisis. We are not letting them go without a fight. Now is the time to stand up for our health and environment.
Make your voice heard to defend our families and communities from dangerous power plant pollution before it's too late.
Sincerely,
Meredith Hankins
