Dear John,
This week’s Spending Review confirmed a devastating cut to Britain’s international aid budget.
Previously enshrined into law at 0.7% of national income, the Conservatives cut it to 0.5% in 2021. Yesterday, this Labour government slashed it even further to only 0.3%.
That’s a MASSIVE 60% cut in just four years 🤯

It might sound abstract. But the consequences are far too real.
From education and clean water, to emergency health support and democracy funding in fragile states – British aid helps build a safer, freer world. And it shows the world what kind of country we are.
These cuts aren’t just a retreat from responsibility. They’re a retreat from Britain’s global role as a champion of democracy and human rights.
Would this decision have been made if we had a system in which ordinary people’s views were properly represented? Probably not.
At Open Britain, we’ve always believed in an outward-looking UK. One that works with our neighbours, stands by our promises, and supports free societies everywhere. Slashing aid undermines that vision.

And when Britain steps back, countries look to others for alliances. And those aren’t always ones with values we share.
If you believe, like we do, that Britain should stand for something better, we need your support. Help our work to make our country a beacon of hope and democracy once again.
Thank you,
Conor
