Constitutional Rights

What to Know: A new essay in Newsweek points out that governors can’t pick and choose which constitutional rights their citizens have.

The TPPF Take: There’s no pandemic exception to constitutional rights.

“As the current pandemic has continued, pundits, politicians, and even judges have behaved as if there is a pandemic exception to the Constitution,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “Public health has been used as an excuse to justify the closure of all ‘non-essential’ businesses in counties where there hasn’t been a single reported case of COVID-19, closure of churches, restrictions on leaving the home, and even the arrest and jailing of hairdressers.”

Directly Helping

What to Know: The Direct Primary Care model of health care delivery is enabling doctors and other providers to be more effective in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The TPPF Take: Direct Primary Care (DPC) is part of TPPF’s Healthy Recovery agenda.

“As health care costs explode, a growing option for patients, direct primary care, is proving to significantly lower health care expenses, and also provide patients a better, more personal experience with their doctor,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “Texas should lead the way by opening a pilot program that allows Medicaid patients access to direct primary care options.”

Powering Our Fight

What to Know: The Brookings Institute notes that you can’t fight pandemics without reliable (and affordable) electric power.

The TPPF Take: Fossil fuels are helping to beat the coronavirus.

“As we weather and emerge from this national crisis, our elected leaders must remember how critical affordable, reliable energy was to getting us through the coronavirus pandemic — and reject any policy proposals that would put that energy in jeopardy,” says TPPF’s Katie Tahuahua. “And as most of the country self-quarantines, it’s more apparent than ever how intimately entwined our lives are with the availability of electricity.”
