Hello,
Fifty-one years ago, the Stonewall Inn, a refuge for the LGBTQ community in Manhattan, was raided by police again. Not only did patrons face the threat of losing their jobs or homes because of who they were and whom they loved, they faced arrest.
That night, the patrons refused to run and hide. They refused to back down. The group, led by Black and Latinx patrons, said "Enough!" Days of protests followed, and the modern LGBTQ rights movement was born.
This Pride Month, millions of Americans continue to fight to not only live authentically and love whom they love -- but to simply exist. And Black LGBTQ Americans are fighting on two fronts.
The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and countless other Black Americans who have died as the result of police brutality have sparked protests in every state in the country. Activists and everyday citizens of all colors are marching together to demand police accountability, justice, and reform, just as they did at the time of Stonewall. All while at the same time, many Black Americans still face the threat of being evicted or denied services for being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer, even after the Supreme Court just struck down discrimination against them in the workplace.
As Congress begins to consider major policing reforms, and the world discusses how to root out racism in our workplaces, our communities, and our own homes, we can take immediate action to end discrimination based on gender and sexual identity.
The House already passed the Equality Act, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to allow debate in the Senate. I am proud to be a co-sponsor of this legislation, but I'll need your help to get it passed into law.
