HIGHLIGHT PIECE OF THE WEEK |
New York's Assisted Suicide Law is a Mistake
|
The Wall Street Journal editorial board wrote, "For centuries most societies have opposed suicide for good reasons. The U.S. spends billions on suicide prevention and mental-health resources because life is precious. No one should die for want of treatment, and palliative care often can ease intense physical suffering." |
In April, the New York State Assembly passed, by a close vote of 81-67, dangerous and discriminatory assisted suicide legislation. During the last week of session, on Monday, June 9th, the New York State Senate approved assisted suicide by a vote of 35-27. A slim majority over the necessary 32 votes for passage. The bill will now head to the desk of Governor Kathy Hochul, who needs to hear from YOU. Click the link below to tell the Governor to VETO this bill!

| Governor Hochul Must Kill the Assisted Suicide Bill |
The New York Post Editorial Board wrote, Advocates claim New York’s bill covers only people with terminal diagnoses and six months or less to live — but 'terminal' isn’t as exact a term as it sounds, and any diagnosis is simply a doctor’s best guess... Embrace that pseudo-mathematics, and soon enough the smart set will be busy 'helping' the disabled and those suffering chronic illnesses to 'realize' they’re better off ending their lives." |

Opponents of Assisted Suicide Are Pushing Back |
Mariya Manzhos, staff writer at Deseret News, "Although the proponents of MAiD often frame assisted suicide as a matter of personal autonomy, those who oppose it believe that in reality, it would accomplish the opposite and endanger vulnerable patients who struggle to access care and support. Weak safeguards of the laws and ambiguous definitions would likely contribute to eventually including a wide range of chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer and even mental health disorders like anorexia."
