Jane Fonda here, John. I know what it’s like to get the news. To sit in a doctor’s office, hear that awful “c-word” — cancer — and feel the ground shift beneath you.
In 2022, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I went through months of chemotherapy. But I was lucky. I had access to incredible doctors and effective treatments made possible by decades of medical research. I don’t take that for granted. Not for a second.
This is why I can’t stay silent while Donald Trump and Elon Musk work to tear down the protections that keep people from getting sick in the first place.
They’re attacking the very science that saved my life.
This administration is trying to slash hundreds of millions of dollars in medical research funding at the National Institutes of Health. They’re letting conspiracy theorists like RFK Jr. dictate public health policy and even pressuring scientists to erase references to mRNA vaccine technology from their research grant applications.
John, these are direct attacks on life-saving science. And while this administration guts medicine, they’re also allowing corporate polluters to poison the air we breathe and the water we drink.
Trump’s EPA unleashed the most consequential environmental rollback in decades with plans to gut pollution limits on coal plants, clean car standards, and climate regulations. The EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said his goal, in his own words, is to drive “a dagger through the heart of climate-change religion.”
If they succeed, Big Oil and corporate polluters will get a free pass to pump even more toxins into our environment, and the price we pay is measured in asthma attacks, cancer diagnoses, and lives cut short.
This is why I’m staying in the fight. I know you’re tired, and it feels like hope is in short supply. I’m fighting those feelings, too, but despair is not an option, John.
Cancer made me think even more about the time I have left and how I want to use it. I don’t want to look back with regrets. I want to know that I did everything in my power to fight for the future — for our health and for the generations that come after us. That’s what keeps me moving forward. That’s why I refuse to sit this one out.

We owe it to our children and their children to demand better. We owe it to ourselves to end fossil fuel dependence and prioritize public health.
